Doing City. Urbanität als wechselseitiges Verhältnis zwischen Struktur und Handlung

Einleitung

Abstract

Seit der kulturhistorischen Wende verschiebt sich in der Stadt- und Urbanisierungsgeschichte der Fokus von der geplanten und gebauten zur gelebten und gedeuteten Stadt. Ausgehend von ethnologischen Impulsen rücken Praktiken als Alltagsroutinen und habitualisierte, wissensbasierte Handlungen in den Mittelpunkt, die soziale Bedeutung diskursiv wie performativ erzeugen. Für die Urbanisierungsgeschichte eröffnet dies die Möglichkeit, konkrete Herstellungsprozesse von Urbanität, als Doing City, im historischen Wandel exemplarisch dicht zu analysieren. Das Themenheft erweitert die in der Stadtethnologie etablierte Perspektive des Doing City um eine historische Dimension. Es geht auf eine Tagung an der Universität Siegen im November 2025 zurück, die den Stadt-Raum als soziale Konstruktion der Moderne aus praxeologischer Perspektive diskutierte. Die Beiträge behandeln Beispiele aus Deutschland, zumeist lokale Fallstudien, und blicken mit einem Schwerpunkt in den 1970er Jahren auf die Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

With the cultural turn, the focus of urban history has shifted from the planned and built city to the lived and interpreted city. Based on impulses from ethnography, practices as everyday routines and habitualized, knowledge-based actions that generate social meaning discursively and performatively have come into focus. For urban history, this opens up the opportunity to conceptualize production processes of urbanity as Doing City. This special issue thus adds a historical dimension to the debate on Doing City established in urban ethnography. It goes back to a conference at the University of Siegen in November 2025, which discussed the social construction of urban space in modernity from a praxeological perspective. The contributions deal with examples from Germany, mostly local case studies, and look at the period after the Second World War with a focus on the 1970s.
