Abstract

Perceptions of and appreciation and emotions for a city can symbolically intensify through music; music thereby can shape the image of a city for citizens and visitors. This paper will discuss music and its place in a city’s history as a part of that city’s cultural, societal and political-historical formation. This music-centred examination will focus on the areas of communication and social interaction and socialization, as well as the interpretative patterns of music. It will not only explore how a specific music culture can be found in cities, but also how this culture is intertwined with community and political developments, and with processes of inclusion and exclusion.
