Abstract

German emigrant musicians are seen as mediators of intercultural Transfer in an age of globalising metropoles. The article concentrates on the Scottish urban centres, Edinburgh and Glasgow, between 1840 and 1914. It is the first to investigate the scope and depth of intercultural transfer through a local approach. Supported by cross-references to other cities in Britain and the United States, it is argued that German musicians had a comprehensive transformative and sustained impact on the soundscapes of their host cities.
