Ununterbrochen in Betrieb. Eine Geschichte der Paternoster in Wien, 1906 bis heute

Abstract

The vertical expansion of the cities is inseparably connected with the invention and spreading of the lift. This put, beside the steel skeleton construction, one of the essential conditions for the coping of the urban mobility which increased since the end of the 19th century in huge speed upwards as well as in the depth. Beside the passenger lift the paternoster lift was installed in office buildings and commercial premises. The circulation lift without waiting periods increased the efficiency and raised the transport capacities. In the world of the employees he represented the uninterrupted working diligence of the ambitious bourgeoisie just as the unceasing circulation of acts, people or quite in general: of capital. At the example of Vienna it is shown how the paternoster lift spread in town and which architectural, social, but also mental results this had and has until today.
