Industriestädte in Ost und West zwischen Krise und Neuausrichtung. Kulturpolitische Strategien der schrumpfenden Städte Dessau und Salzgitter

Abstract

The article looks at uneven development and transformation, in particular, the shrinking of industrial cities. It is based on the initial results of an ongoing re search project in which East and West German industrial cities are, for the first time, examined historically and comparatively in regard to their cultural policy development strategies. By comparing the cities across political and system boundaries, it is possible to see the characteristic development paths, problems and strategies of these industrialised cities, as well as to identify the disparities between them, especially in relation to development opportunities. The medium-sized, problem-stricken cities of Dessau and Salzgitter are used as examples in this study.
